Simple. They don't have Republicans. They actually give a **** about each other and come together to help each other. In the US- it's every man for himself. Just ask a Libertarian.

You know what companies do when they're having trouble in Japan? They all take a pay cut- even the CEOs. They work TOGETHER as a team. Amazing what that can do for a society.

The "far right" wing exists in Japan. They're most relegated to being just in the corner but have occasionally won some elections lately. :(

Expect software announcements at an Apple special event on 30 January (the consumer release date for Vista, as if you didn't know already). There Steve will talk about Leopard's Top Secret features and the new iLife suite, just so that once MS have stopped kicking themselves after the release of the iPhone and the bruises are starting to heal, they can do it all over again. See Zunes and Vista in bargain bins all over the world (I know that Zunes are only on sale in the US at present, but in order to get rid of stock they will be put on sale everywhere without any software support whatsoever).

I have to disagree with your logic on this. It would be a big mistake to release Leopard, or for that matter have any sort of media event about Leopard on or around the time of Vista's launch. They should wait at least a few weeks after Vista's release.

It's not that Leopard doesn't have the potential ability to out-shine Vista, it certainly does. But as far as public attention goes, with the majority market share held by Microsoft, all eyes will be on Vista, as far as media coverage goes. While Leopard would certainly not be lost in the shuffle as far as Mac users go, any potential press that Apple could garner from it's release would be basically wasted. In fact, I could imagine such a move by Apple could be viewed as an "out of desperation" announcement, to the general (Non-Mac User) public and media alike.

Apple would be much wiser to release it a few weeks later, probably close to a month after Vista's release, at a minimum. That is, of course, if it's even ready to ship.

The MacBook and MacBook Pro EFI firmware updates (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/12/08/apple-releases-airport-software-update-firmware-updates-addressing-superdrive-noise/) were issued in December 2009 as part of package to address noise from the optical drive, but were altered at some point after their initial release to also introduce support for a maximum of 8 GB of RAM for users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

Consequently, OWC recommends that users of Late 2008 MacBooks and MacBook Pros interested in upgrading to 8 GB of RAM check System Profiler on their machine to determine whether they are running the latest Boot ROM versions of MBP51.007E.B05 (MacBook Pro) or MB51.007D.B03 (MacBook), and if not, re-download the EFI firmware update and apply it to their machines.

A couple of issues remain unanswered:

    * A user has reported on the blog that his MBP5,1 running Leopard has accepted 8GB of memory.

    * Updating with the old version of the MBP EFI Updater 1.8 will already result in the aforementioned Boot ROM version numbers, thus preventing the use of the revised EFI Updater.

On the low end, yes, Mac Pro's are overpriced. But after you go dual socket and factor in a case that isn't all plastic crap (some kind of style to it) you pay the same. OP is, like so many others, just wishing for a slimmed down i7 desktop with easy access and PCI expansion. Apple just doesn't make those atm and hasn't really ever. PPC vs. Intel is too apples and oranges to compare. I can barely build a system myself with sale parts under dual socket Mac Pro prices. Well, maybe I can now as the Mac's are 250 days old and Sandy Bridge just destroyed the margins on Nehalem and Westmere. But when all the parts were new it was a wash.

I have to say I find it incredible these days what people think should and shouldn't be allowed to do. A school is run with a set of rules governing how children should and shouldn't behave. If the school sets the rules then it's up to them what they allow and don't. A child choosing to attend that school does so under the acceptance that they abide by that schools rules. It's as simple as that.

Its not about human rights or what you think is right and wrong. Children these days believe they know everything and won't accept being told what is wrong or right by adults with far more experience.

I agree they can't permanently confiscate (or steal) your laptop, but they CAN confiscate it and return it to you until the end of the school day or when you vacate the premises, and they CAN stop you using your own laptops/mobile phones on THEIR premises.

So when you were young, you just blindly followed what older people said to you, even if they were completely wrong? Kids don't think they know everything, they just don't like being accused (and treated) wrongly.

My bad if this is for real, it just sounds so much like the iPhone Antenna issues threads that started last year. I bought in to that whole garbage hook line and sinker at first and there were tons of newbies posting on the problem.

When I finally got to see a few actual iPhone 4's (never bought one since I am still under contract for 3GS) -- I could not replicate the problem. Over the past year I must have tried on about 20 iPhone 4's of friends, many times in areas of really bad coverage and compared it directly with my 3GS -- but no antenna issue could be discerned that was any worse than other smart phones and it consistently out-performed the antenna on my 3GS.

Clearly volume of posts (108,000) does not make the problem real since the iPhone 4 Antenna got more posts than I can count on more threads than I count. But it certainly lends some credence.

I also find it a bit hard to believe that Halebopp has managed to get 3 iPad 2's in the two weeks that they have been out and that he is waiting for the 4th given the production shortages. Unless Halebopp is going down to the Apple Store every morning at 7am and waiting in line for it to open so he can exchange the unit before the stock disappears. Maybe Apple Store is willing to hold one for you if you call the day before and tell them about the problem you are having and that you need an exchange. But I remember when folks where exchanging their 27-inch iMacs that had screen problems that it took quite a while to get replacement units.

So maybe it was/is a bit presumptuous of me to assume that since mine was fine that this was a repeat of that whole Antenna-gate thing. If so then I apologize, and I will reserve my judgement until there are enough iPad 2's out there in circulation for me to test with a dozen or so units of friends.

With regards to whether or not I think folks have the time or desire to post fake problems with regards to Apple products, I believe the answer is "yes" based on what I have seen. Does it mean that is always or usually the case, probably not.

    @ BC2009
I would just like to report that I received iPad #4 last night - no problems, looks beautiful and zero light leakage, also passed the dead or stuck pixel test so I'm very happy. Genius bar and the people at local Apple store were extremely helpful even adding "if you still have any problems in a couple months just bring it back and we'll exchange at that time"

I didn't wait in any lines whatsoever, iPad was ordered online right when they went on sale so I received shipment fairly quickly with iPad #1. It was just good customer service by the "Genius" working for me.

I think some people just hate the message, or anything that reminds them of something they're not but wish they were.....

I don't see how he's not arrogant. The message from Justin always seems to go something like... "Oh you get viruses, oh, ouch, that sucks, because, um, I don't."

You know, on second thought, you're right, he's modest.

Digital magazines could be successful if they allow subscriptions. I would even be ok if the digital sub was a little more than physical since I always loose or destroy the physical magazine.

Part of the blame goes to Apple and their money grubbing ways, in that they want a 30% cut of gross sub $. This makes it far less attractive for publishers to do this. Also, I too would love a unified model, but I am sure Apple would also want a slice of the action here as well.

I'm not a thrifty person by nature, so it says plenty that I refuse to pay the prices they're asking for these mags on the iPad. It really is that simple. Make them $1.99 and sales will go through the roof.

Yea, the value for the price is not there. You can get the paper version of Wired for $10/yr via Amazon. Why would you pay the crazy prices for the digital version, if anything it should be even cheaper.

It's not Conde Nast being smarter its Conde Nast not knowing how to execute a digital strategy that works.

Wait so, how are we supposed to report No Coverage in an area with, well, no coverage?

You are not supposed to report it. Since you can't send the report the company does not have to fix the issue. This is smart, then they can report to the world that they don't have gaps in their coverage. ;)

    Take that Verizon. LOL.

I'm still rather new to to Macs, but is there precedent for releasing software like iLife later on in the MacWorld show? it's a few days isn't it? is it possible that it might be released later in the week?

Steve generally announces iLife updates during his keynote every year, but it didn't happen this year. :( I'm hoping it will be released (or at least announced) sometime this week, just like what you're hoping for. I love iLife and I would really like to see what features/improvements they add to iPhoto and iMovie. I can't imagine Apple waiting too long to do something...
