My friends lawyer screwed up the application and it was returned. Later on it was filed and got accepted without their help. Now they are billing him and threatening him. What can he do?

Dyekek12 - my friend....We all are here only wishing the best for each other.! There has to be a reason why majority of folks who responded to to ur post in fact agree with what i had to say...This country is full of opportunity - no doubt about that.! But boy - one has to heavy, heavy price for that.!! A price that a lot of folks on this forum have to come to see - one that is not worth it.!. Yes - i am talking about the GC. Something that promises you all the freedom, flexibility, mobility that each one of is entiltled too.! But the road to get the GC is a road better not taken.! The only reason most of the folks here think alike - because we're already on this extremely bumpy road...invested time, $$, energy into all this.! And we all have been bought to a stage where we are standing outside the temple but are not allowed inside to seek blessings.! We don't know when we will be allowed inside..?? This is the anxiety that ends up eating u inside.!! Extremely uncomfortable, uneasy and anxiety filled scenario.!!

I wrote to a lot of anchors, newsmen. Got 2 replies. One was from Bloomberg, the financial TV channel. I co-ordinated with IV media team and they took it from there and a nice story came two weeks ago, as you can see from a link at 'IV in News' or here (http://www.immigrationvoice.org/index.php?option=com_weblinks&task=view&catid=19&id=52)

I had emailed 4-5 different reporters (Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Dallas, Houston) who had recently published articles on immigration. The reporter from Tulsa emailed me back the same day (within a few hours) saying that he is interested in the "legal immigration" angle and would like to pursue it if I was willing to be interviewed and be photographed. I set up a time and place for the interview and the photo.
I had two conditions that the reporter agreed to:
1) He would not use my employer's name, and
2) After he finalizes his story, he would read back all my quotes to me to ensure no misquotations.
He graciously complied with both my requests. I was surprised to see front page coverage. I sent a Thank you email to the reporter after the article was published. He told me that various people (legal immigrants) from the Tulsa area had contacted him after reading the article and wanted to know more about Immigration Voice.

AVS channel has an indian program every saturday starting 10am -12.00pm
I am sure many indians watch this.There is also 'free' immigration advise by some lawyers at the end of the program.
If some one has contacts at AVS may be IV could get more coverage.

Hi all,
My attorney (a great guy by the way) filed my I485 without my employment verification letter. When I raised the question, he argued that the employment verification letter cannot be a ground for denial and that worst case scenario will be USCIS sending a RFE.
Is it true that it is not a ground for denial?
Is is possible to send it it separately to complete the file?
What would be your advice?

You bring up a good point about the conference committee. When is the conference committee needed? Is it when bills are significantly different or even for slight differences. I thought conference is only needed if the bills are significantly different and needs to be negotiated between 2 houses. If only few provisions ( like ours) are different then can it be voted on by the house as it is without any conference and get a up or down vote? Now this all assumes that republicans are actually serious about some kind of relief to legal folks which I am seriously starting to doubt.
if they take the bill, they might listen to us and include our provisions in this bill because our provisions are part of the CIR bill which they passed it.
but they will make changes to 'secure act' and pass it in such a way it goes to conference committee (big chance of this going because senate wants 370 miles fence, house wants 700miles) and they wont have time for that committee now, so they will work on it next yr after elections. again after elections, it is diff game as you said. anyhow we caught in the middle of their game.

May be I am not understanding the question right...I think the question was - what are the STEM disciplines? I know the website lists a bunch of occupations that require one of the STEM degrees. So to look at what are the STEM degrees, I chose Browse By STEM Degree and in that Scroll menu are all the majors - starts with Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering....
The question that was asked was - is Statistics a STEM discipline. That cannot be answered from that page even though it looks so. For e.g if I choose the Mathematics Major, it only lists the occupation that requires a Math Major and not the disciplines under Math. For e.g. one one of the occupation is Natural Sciences Managers which is an occupation and not exactly a discipline.

Thanks for sharing the info. This part is really scary. I know potential employers are doing it. Can't believe CBP is doing it. You mean they will do it when you hand over the passport and I-94 at the airport and make a decision on that. WOW
more than scary this is stupid. So if someone with same name as me has a webpage on al-jazeera or some other such site, then I am screwed at the port of entry.
Worse, if I dont like someone just setup a webpage or two in that persons name, pledge allegiance to some fundamentalist Islamic group, put a photo-shopped image of him next to osama bin laden, and the next time that guy tries to re-enter the US... bam... Guantanamo bay! he wont even know what hit him.
Would love to see the look on the CBP officers face to see a photo of the person in front of him with his arms around osama bin laden. A Kodak moment.

I don't know if this is old news but thought of sharing it anyway.
I was in the same boat as many others here i.e, no FP notice even 1yr after filing for 485. With my PD becoming current in Aug 2008, I called my attorney to see if he can do anything to help me out. He told me that due to several complaints from people like us and a law suit threat (or an actual lawsuit, not sure) from AILA, the Texas center has sent has set up an exclusive fax line for such requests. This system came into existence only about 2-3 weeks ago.
He sent a fax on my behalf to that number last Tuesday 7/15/08. My wife and I both received FP notices on Sat 7/19/08! So looks like for a change, something that’s set up for our own good is actually working. Frankly, I hadn’t pinned any hopes on the fax having a positive impact but I was pleasantly surprised. Our appointments are for next week.
Hope this little tip will help others in the same boat if their attorneys are either not aware and/or haven’t told their clients about it.
The fax number is not made available to the general public. Only attorneys have access to it.
BTW: As a result of all this, I haven't seen any LUD changes (soft or hard) on my case status online....I thought that was strange.

Hi All,
If we can get one thing fixed, it should be about adding another step before 485, i.e. people should be able to apply for 485 without the priority date getting current/get EAD so we can move to different companies. At-least it clears lot of head-aches for me. I know that I am dreaming, but hey... that's all I got.

"If your RD for the 485 is later than that that means they didn't get to look at your file yet even though your PD is current."
I heard it is based on ND(Notice Date) not RD(ReceivedDate) of 485.

A lot of folks are planning to leave the original sponsor after 180 days. My question is, is there any harm in quitting after 6 months as compared to say 9 months or a year? Would USCIS look infavorably on my application if I quit as soon as the AC21 can kick in? Would quitting after a few more months be any better?
